History is an argument built from evidence.

Artifacts do not explain themselves. Historians observe what survives, connect it to context, compare accounts, and make a conclusion they can defend. A Christian student also asks how Scripture shapes the meaning of human dignity, power, worship, judgment, and hope.

A biblical frame for human history

Genesis presents people as image-bearers of God: capable of language, creativity, stewardship, relationship, and rebellion. Genesis 1–11 supplies the theological foundation this course uses to interpret civilization.

Keep categories clearScripture makes theological and historical claims. Archaeology studies surviving material evidence. They can inform the same questions, but they are not the same kind of source.

Creation and the cultural mandate

Genesis 1:26–28 describes humans as made in God’s image and charged with filling and stewarding the earth. Ask: How might farming, governing, naming, building, and making be expressions of culture?

Judgment, covenant, and the Flood

Genesis 6–9 connects human violence with judgment and then records God’s covenant with Noah. Ask: What do judgment and mercy reveal about the biblical view of God?

Babel and dispersion

Genesis 11 presents a city, a tower, and a united attempt to “make a name.” God confuses language and scatters the people. Ask: Is the problem technology, city-building, disobedience, pride—or a combination?

Place“Mesopotamia” refers to the region between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. Irrigation supported farming but demanded organized labor and maintenance.

Political lifeSumer included independent city-states such as Ur, Uruk, and Lagash. Authority, temple life, farming, and trade were closely connected.

WritingEarly writing grew partly from record keeping. Cuneiform signs were pressed into clay and later used for law, literature, letters, mathematics, and more.

LawHammurabi’s stele publicly presented a king as a guardian of justice. Its cases also reveal differences in status, gender, work, property, and punishment.

Big question: A law code tells us what leaders wanted order to look like. Does it prove that ordinary life always worked that way? What other evidence would you want?

The NileThe river’s annual cycles, fertile valley, and transportation route supported dense settlement and centralized rule.

KingshipPharaoh stood at the meeting point of religion, government, and cosmic order. Monuments made royal power visible across generations.

WritingHieroglyphic signs could represent sounds, words, or meaning clues. Scribes also used other Egyptian scripts for everyday and administrative work.

Death and afterlifeMummification, tomb goods, funerary texts, and judgment scenes reveal hopes about identity and life beyond death—but practices changed across time and class.

Careful chronology: Scholars propose different dates and historical settings for Joseph and the Exodus. This expedition does not label one Egyptian kingdom or pharaoh as certain when the evidence is debated.

Compare without flattening“Mesopotamian,” “Egyptian,” and “biblical” each cover many texts, centuries, and communities. Look for patterns, but avoid pretending every person believed exactly the same thing.

Worldview leaves tracesAsk what a source assumes about the divine, human worth, rightful power, justice, death, and hope. Then point to the actual words or objects supporting your conclusion.

A strong historian does more than label a source. Ask who made it, when, for whom, why, what survives, and what the source cannot tell you.

Lab 01 • 7 days

Apple preservation investigation

Compare how dry materials change apple samples. This is a model of desiccation, not a recreation of ancient embalming.

Safety: Adult supervision recommended. Do not eat any sample. Wash hands and discard samples if mold appears.

Cut four similar pieces. Record starting mass or dimensions and appearance.
Leave A exposed. Cover B with salt, C with baking soda, and D with an equal-parts dry mixture.
Observe on days 1, 3, and 7 without tasting. Record mass or size, color, texture, odor, and visible growth.
Write a claim: Which condition removed moisture most effectively? Cite at least two observations.

Lab 02 • 1–2 days

Engineered writing sheet

Build a cross-layered sheet to explore why fiber direction and pressure matter. Paper towel and glue make a model; they do not make authentic papyrus.
